Whitetail Mortality Insurance

There is a long history of misunderstanding and terrible coverage. Many policies in the past have not given farmers the coverages they need when their is a death.

We have partnered with NADeFA to design a program that will insure whitetail deer; and give the farmers the protection they have been after.

Capture Myopathy, Pneumonia, Handling Accidents, Necropsy's with unknown causes of death, Artificial Insemination, Semen Extraction, Accidents in the Pens, Attacks by other animals or dogs(even if they did not get in the pens). These are the reasons whitetail deer die; and we will cover these exposures.

You cannot purchase this broad coverage on a farm policy. Animal Mortality is not livestock coverage, but a specialty product that requires a separate policy.

September Fishing on the White

Fishing was good the last week of September on the white. Many new salmon coming into the system every day. This male was sitting in the hole right behind a female that was on the gravel.

Many Guides are hunting with no hunting liability insurance. You cannot afford to go without. Insurance companies that do not understand the hunting industry put * on the policy. Some do not like guns, some do not like tree stands, others want 1 on 1 guided only.

Lots of big deer in the area. Unfortunately, too much corn still standing and large bean fields. Should be a good year for the muzzle loaders. The farms are great. I would suggest booking a gun trip, or a bow trip later in the year.

I am leaving tomorrow morning for Ken McIntosh's place in Indiana. Free range, stick the biggest buck you can find. Dean Weerstra and I will be hunting through Tuesday. Looks like the weather will cooperate. Ken is a customer of mine, and we are excited to be hunting with him.

Deer & Elk Breeding

Many insurance coverages get over looked for Breeders. Today I am going to discuss farmers markets and Glucosamine Pills.

Setting up a booth at the farmers market is an off-premises liability exposure. Your farm/home insurance policy will not normally cover this exposure. You many be required to provide a liability certificate to the farmers market before you set up. Check with your current policy to see if your exposure is covered.

Glucosamine Pills are another unusual liability exposure. The key is to have your insurance company educated so they are not treated like pharmaceuticals. Giving the insurance company as much information as you can, so they can include the coverage on your farm/home insurance policy, is the key.

Hunting Guide Insurance

Seems there is increased pressure to carry liability insurance while guiding on County, State and Federal land. If you are taking customers out on bear or other hunts on property you do not own, the municipality can require you to have a liability policy, and name them as an additional insured.

There are short term policies available for hunting specific seasons on County, State and Federal land.

Livestock & Semen Coverage

There are very few companies left that will insure your deer. Many of the companies that insure your livestock want to insure your home as well. Insuring your home on a farm policy with the livestock will be the least expensive. You may wish to keep your home insurance with your local insurance agent. There is one insurance carrier that will allow you to insure the livestock without the home.

Make sure you ask several questions of the agent regarding coverage. There needs to be no question what is covered and what is not covered. The last thing you need is confusion at the time of a claim. Unfortunately, many local insurance agents do not understand the coverage forms.

Many of you have hundred's of thousands of dollars of semen on your property at anyone time. Insuring the semen is possible on some farm owners policies. It is critical to find out what is covered and if the insurance is worth purchasing. Transportation coverage is also available. Make sure you find out if there is coverage when you use a third party carrier.(UPS, FEDEX, ect).

Ranch Insurance Exposures

Finding an insurance company that understands the hunting and breeding industry is critical to properly insuring your business. Whether you are operating a breeding operation or hunting preserve, there are several coverages you need that are not in the standard insurance policies.

Many of you have a company that runs the breeding or hunting operation. You may also have a separate LLC to own the property. It is important for you to have both names on the policy for liability. For those of you that lease property, the land owner should only be named as an additional insured. Additional insured status assumes they have a primary policy, but want to be named on your coverage for liability related to your operation.

Auto insurance is also overlooked. If you hold personal title to your vehicle, your company does not own the vehicle. The company still has a "non-owned" auto exposure that needs insurance. Additionally, if you have a personal vehicle insured on a company policy, you have a gap in coverage.

Buildings are often under-insured based in the cost to rebuild. Remember you are not insuring the buildings for their market value, but the cost to replace them. Many have walking coolers, pulley systems, and complex heating systems. For the little amount of premium it costs, you should consider reviewing your coverage.

Hunting Liability

Most insurance companies do not understand the hunting industry. We spend countless hours making sure we have the safety procedures in place so there are no injuries in the field. It is a constant battle educating first the agent, and then trying to have the agent explain what we are doing to the underwriter. If the underwriter does not fully understand the risk, they will just refuse to quote and issue a policy. Many other underwriters will "go out on a limb" and charge too much for the policy.

We understand the hunting industry. Whether you have a high fence or open range guiding operation, we can help you get affordable insurance. The policy cannot be rated on just sales. There is no difference in liability between a 140 management buck and a 200 class trophy. Why would the insurance companies charge based on sales? The answer is, most have no other way to rate the policy. We look at what you are hunting, how you are hunting, how many hunts per year, and sales, to determine a premium.

Bottom-line, you need to purchase insurance from someone that understands the industry. You will not get the best policy from local agents who have to go over the learning curve every time you speak to them.
